Clean Energy

MEGA QUESTION: How does Michigan reach a consensus on implementing an achievable Clean Energy Policy that supports energy independence, affordability & economic development?

The world knows we still have the best of the best when it comes to technical, manufacturing, and construction professionals. No one can hold a candle to our produc¬tivity when we work together. Instead of wind turbines being made in Nevada, let's build them here. Our message from this symposium was very simple: we can design and build today and tomorrow's alternative energy products and export them to the U.S. and the world. The watchwords are "Made in Michigan!"

Director's Recommendations:

  1. The directors recommend a center of energy excellence in Michigan as identified by the "Now" workgroup as a first step in achieving a comprehensive energy plan. Within the short term, it is imperative that the energy conservation and efficiency be accelerated within the state.
  2. The directors laud the desire on the part of the leadership of Michigan to pursue aggressively diversified energy supply while creating jobs and diversifying the economy of the state. To date, however, the realities of energy affordability for this diversification and the impact on economic development have been largely absent from the adoption of Michigan's energy policies. Without giving these realities a forum, the state energy diversification policies may likely fail to promote the state's economic position. The directors therefore recommend that a two–five year energy diversification plan be developed under the leadership of the Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth (DELEG).
  3. Developing a "roadmap" for a carbon-free footprint should be an inclusive and collaborative process of all stakeholders. Otherwise, we will never "arrive" at our desired destination.
